Outdoor aluminium profiles live a harder life than their indoor cousins. UV breaks down low-grade finishes in two seasons. Freeze-thaw cycles open up any joint that wasn't engineered for movement. Pool-side chlorine attacks anything below marine-grade specification. The good news is that EN AW-6063-T5 aluminium with the right anodising or powder-coated finish handles all of it.
The terrace profile family
In the German-speaking market the dedicated subcategory is Terrassenprofil — terrace profile — covering the deeper-section edge profiles, drip-edge profiles and balcony-edge terminations specified for tiled outdoor flooring. The profile geometry differs from indoor edge trim in three ways: deeper anchoring leg (to integrate with the typical 8–12 cm screed-and-membrane buildup), an integrated drip edge that throws water clear of the substrate face, and a finish specification rated for at least 25 years of exterior UV exposure.
Three duties
First, water management. Outdoor tile floors must shed water, not pond it. The terrace profile creates a controlled, visible drip line at every elevated edge.
Second, mechanical protection. Outdoor edges meet shoes, chairs, cleaning equipment and weather. The profile takes the impact so the tile doesn't.
Third, visual termination. A clean metal edge on a terrace reads as architectural; a raw tile edge reads as unfinished.
Material and finish choices
For coastal and pool-side applications we recommend either marine-grade anodised aluminium (Type II hard anodising, 25 µm minimum coating) or AISI 316 stainless steel in the highest-exposure positions. For inland terraces, standard architectural anodising (15 µm) or powder-coating to RAL is sufficient and significantly more cost-effective.
